‘Finding the Chicken’ at Kalk Bay Books
Professor John Cartwright, co-author of Where’s The Chicken? Making South Africa Safe chatted to MC and radio presenter John Maytham about safety and security, at Kalk Bay Books last night. The speakers discussed the theory that was used to underpin the principles outlined in the book, and just how those principles could be applied to situations in local communities. While the topic of safety and security in the South African context is contentious to some, Professor Cartwright emphasized that changing the way we as South Africans think about safety is the catalyst for bringing about change in our communities, and society at large. His colleague, friend, and co-author, Professor Clifford Shearing, also pointed out that the questions we ask are crucial, and when it comes to the issue of crime, we need to ask “how do we reduce the likelihood of crime happening again?” Some pertinent questions were posed by members of the audience, and while all acknowledged that some answers may not be readily available, they agreed that it would require a long-term, collective effort to change the way we think about safety and security in South Africa.
Where’s The Chicken? Making South Africa Safe is available as an eBook from Amazon and Kalahari.
