Joburg.co.za Reviews Out to Lunch…Ungagged: The best of Bullard since THAT column by David Bullard

Verdict: carrot
I don’t think any of us can forget reading “that” David Bullard column in the Sunday Times in 2008 – a column that has subsequently been called the most racist column to ever appear in a South African newspaper. I can clearly remember Stephen reading it with wide-eyes before turning to me and saying, “I think our Mr Bullard is going to get into all kinds of sh*t for this.” And how right he was.
I, on the other hand, was slightly confused. I could fully understand why so many people were up in arms about it because it was a highly flammable article, but not once did I feel that I was being forced to substitute David Bullard’s opinions for my own. I read the article quite a few times, followed the ensuing outcry with great interest, and concluded that any newspaper that agreed to publish the article, choose a headline for it, have a sub editor proof it and then hide behind the journalist in question when the public started being mean and nasty – well, I think they are cowards.
